Why Dallas Cowboys shouldn’t wait on Zack Martin extension

The Dallas Cowboys have spent the large portion of the last decade focused on improving the offensive line. It started with the selection of Tyron Smith in the 2011 NFL Draft. It continued with the selection of Travis Frederick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Both players became perennial Pro Bowlers and All-Pro Selections.

The Dallas Cowboys completed their trifecta of All-Pro linemen with the selection of guard Zack Martin in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Martin instantly became one of the top offensive lineman in the league and solidified the Cowboys’ newfound commitment to the run game.

The Cowboys rewarded Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick with long-term extensions in the 2015 and 2016 offseason. Martin is entering the final year of his deal and is in line to get paid. Here’s why the team should prioritize extending the former Irishman:

Dallas Cowboys Identity:

Dallas realized that to become more balanced on offense, they needed to establish a run game. Drafting three offensive linemen in four years shows that they value having a vaunted front five. The team also added Connor Williams in the second round of this year’s draft. Williams was a talented Texas Longhorn, and will kick inside to guard for the Dallas Cowboys. Having La’el Collins on the team at right tackle gives Dallas one of the youngest, most talented lines in the league. With Ezekiel Elliott available for the whole season, the team has the potential to be a juggernaut on the ground in 2018. Additionally, Dak Prescott should rebound and play more effectively given the line protecting him. With talent on defense, the offense has a chance to push the team over the top.

Conclusion:

Dallas shouldn’t let all the investment they’ve done in the offensive line go to waste. After signing fellow all-pro linemen Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick to top of the market deals, Martin should join them as one of the highest paid offensive linemen in football later this summer. With a top talent at running back in Ezekiel Elliott running behind this offensive line, Dallas can be a force on offense. A good year by quarterback Dak Prescott can solidify the Cowboys as contenders in 2018.
