Well folks, the first game of the 2018 NFL season is finally less than a week away. No more wondering what you’re going to do when Sundays come around. The Dallas Cowboys will be facing the Carolina Panthers in Carolina this Sunday at 3:30pm. I’d like to take a minute and give a couple of reasons why Mr. Cam Newton should be worried about their upcoming home game.
This off-season, the Panthers lost their starting guard Andrew Norwell after he left during free agency. They found an ok replacement in Amini Silatolu, but then he tore his meniscus and will be sidelined for six weeks or more. That leaves undrafted journeyman Greg Van Roten who will be the replacement. That’s not the only injury they’re dealing with. Starting right tackle Daryl Williams got injured in training camp when he tore his MCL, so the Panthers will have to rely on their second year tackle Taylor Moton. But wait, that’s not all. Starting left tackle, Matt Kalil, is now week to week after having arthroscopic knee surgery this past Monday. Jeremiah Sirles, who was playing for Kalil, injured his hamstring during the third preseason game.
Seems that luck has not been on the Panthers’ side. If all these injuries don’t cause Cam and the coaches to worry, then how about the strong defense the Cowboys have? During the preseason, Dallas’ first team defense allowed 2.2 yards per carry and a 63 passer rating against. Moton will have his work cut out for him this Sunday if he’s placed at left tackle. You can bet defensive end Demarcus Lawrence will be gunning for Newton as he tries to break his 14.5 sack record. One thing’s for sure, this will be an exciting first game. Go Cowboys!
