At the inaugural NBA Awards show at Basketball City at Pier 36 in New York City, New York hosted by musician Drake, Dirk Nowitzki received the 2016-17 Twyman-Stokes NBA Teammate of the Year award.
Nowitzki:
“Thank you very much. It’s an honor to be here. This is a great award and I’m pretty sure none of my teammates voted for me. I joke a lot with them and we have a lot of fun. I just try and make them feel welcome and get the best out of them. Now on the court, I’m tough sometimes, but I’m just trying to get the best out of them.
I want to thank, obviously, my wife and my family their continued support and letting stumble up and down the court for a couple more years. I want to thank Mark Cuban and the ownership, coach [Rick] Carlisle and his staff for putting me in a position where I can still play a little bit. My teammates were there every day supporting me, to push me, and motivate me which is sometimes hard as you get older. But, I’m still enjoying it, I’m still enjoying getting to compete.
I’ll be around hopefully for a couple more years.
Thanks you guys for coming. Have a good night.”
When asked in his press conference what receiving the award meant to him, Nowitzki responded:
“I never thought I would get a Teammate of the Year award, but it means a lot to me. It means that I lead my teammates the right way, on and off the floor. I was fortunate when I got in the league, I had some great teammates to show me the way and that was Steve Nash and Michael Finley, two great, unbelievable pros that basically raised me right in this league and I basically followed in their footsteps ever since.”
