The Dallas Cowboys play at AT&T Stadium Monday Night against the Tennessee Titans after coming off a bye week. The Cowboys are sitting at third place in the division with a 3-4 record and looking to fight to get back into first place after trading for wide receiver Amari Cooper. Here are three ways the Cowboys can get their offense rolling heading into the last eight games of the season.
Use Amari Cooper as a Decoy
Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper hopes to be a major contributor on offense after being traded from the Oakland Raiders to Dallas last week during the bye week. Cooper has been working heavily with quarterback Dak Prescott to prepare against the Titans on Monday night.
One way for the Cowboys to get favorable matchups is by using Amari Cooper as a decoy. Dating back to last season, defensive coordinators have figured out the solution to beating the Cowboys, that is to stop running back Ezekiel Elliott.
With the addition of Cooper, the Cowboys will have a threat on the outside teams will have to account for. Having a playmaker on the outside will allow other players on offense to have one on one matchups.
Ezekiel Elliott the past three games has been inconsistent as a runner whether it has attributed to bad offensive line play or lack of effort by him.
Cooper will allow Elliott to be more effective in running and passing situations. On Monday night, the Cowboys should move Cooper all over the field to create better matchups for the offense.
RPO For Dak Prescott
Run-Pass Option has been a very effective weapon for the Cowboys when they use it in key situations. The problem is the coaching staff does not do it enough which limits the playmaking ability of quarterback Dak Prescott.
The problem Prescott has is he does not make accurate throws consistently from the pocket, which is the way defenses game plan when they go up against the Cowboys.
A way to make him more effective is to put him in situations to use his legs and throw from outside the pocket.
The coaching staff will have to do a better job over the next nine games of putting Prescott in positions where he is most comfortable. The worst thing you can do to a quarterback is limit his abilities that will make him be effective.
When Prescott is not being a factor in the run game the team struggles, so it will be up to him and the coaching staff to get the running game back in order if we want the offense to be balanced.
Offensive Line Get it Together
The Cowboys offensive line has been very inconsistent through the first seven games. Center Travis Frederick has been sidelined since training camp and will miss the entire 2018 season after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Frederick being absent has surely been a factor to the offensive line struggles but the front office knew the hiring of offensive line coach Paul Alexander was the bigger problem. The Cowboys fired Alexander as he has brought in his scheme in which the entire line has struggled to grasp the technique and hand placements.
Mid season roster moves usually aren’t good for the team, but this was a change that desperately needed to be made for the betterment of the team. When your best unit is struggling the entire team will slowly fall right behind them.
Newly hired offensive line coach and former Cowboys offensive lineman Marc Columbo, he will be take over and implementing the hardnosed and dogfighting style this offensive line is used to playing.
It might take a couple weeks for the offensive line to get its groove back but I believe once it does, the offense will be back to playing their style of football.
