The Suns are shopping Tyson Chandler, should Mavs be interested?

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Phoenix Suns are shopping Tyson Chandler, along with guard Brandon Knight, ahead of Thursday’s 2 p.m. CT Trade Deadline, but have “struggled all week for traction on their guys.”

 

Chandler’s best years in the NBA have arguably been as a Dallas Maverick. In 2011, he was the defensive anchor for a team of nobodies, helping Dirk Nowitzki and Mark Cuban earn the Mavs first and only NBA championship. Following that magical season, Cuban made a controversial decision to not offer Chandler a long-term deal, while instead chasing the likes of Dwight Howard.

 

“Let’s just say I learn from my mistakes,” Cuban later said in September of 2014, after re-acquiring Chandler in a six-player deal with the New York Knicks, just in time for the final season of his four-year, $56 million deal.

 

“Obviously it would have been better if we could have kept him, right?” Cuban said.

But, in the summer of 2015, the Mavericks once again decided to let Chandler walk in free agency in hopes of signing [deep sigh] DeAndre Jordan. Many believed that Chandler was Plan B for the Mavericks, had they struck out on Jordan. Instead, Chandler signed a mammoth four-year, $52 million deal in the early stages of free agency with the Suns and Chandler was gone once again.

 

At 8.4 points and 11.4 rebounds, Chandler has provided solid production for the Suns this season at the center position, but two seasons into Chandler’s deal, the 18-39 Suns appear ready to move onto a complete rebuild. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the Mavs rebuilding plan, at 34 years-old Chandler remains a productive player on both ends of the floor should they decide to make a late-season push to make the playoffs.
 

Maybe the third times a charm for Chandler in Mavs blue and silver? Mavs fans can only hope. As of yet, no reports have linked Chandler in a trade to Dallas. Stay tuned.
