The Dallas Mavericks hosted their annual open scrimmage yesterday. The team decided to rest three of their starters – Dirk Nowitzki, Andrew Bogut, and Deron Williams – along with backup guard Devin Harris. With that being said, the newcomer stole the show in the brief 20-minute scrimmage. No, I’m not talking about the $94-million man, Harrison Barnes. Instead, I’m referring to another new addition, Seth Curry.
Curry scored 15 points on 4-9 shooting, despite his team eventually losing 30-21.
“I was trying to play fast, get up and down, and trying to get in the best shape possible. I was just trying to have fun out there. It was the first time getting in front of the Mavs’ crowd in Dallas, so I was trying to put on a show for them. And like I said, just have fun.”
While the Mavericks are loaded at the guard position, they figure to definitely find a legitimate spot in the rotation for Curry. He has always been labeled a lethal shooter with extensive range, he had really started to blossom towards the end of the season, becoming a very viable point guard option for the Sacramento Kings. Once he joined the starting lineup, he averaged 14.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 29.9 minutes per game. He has already caught the attention of Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.
“He could legitimately play both guard positions, and he’s going to be a factor for us,” Carlisle said. “He’s better than I thought he was, and he’s at an age where he’s still getting better really at both positions, so I’m excited about him.”
It’s clear that Seth can shoot. He wants everyone to start respecting him as more of an all-around player, and if he continues to gain the trust of Rick Carlisle, he will get that opportunity this season. Sky is the limit for the young fella.
“I know my potential and what I can do, and that’s what I base myself off of. Not what my brother did or what my dad did,” Curry said.
