Recap: Mavs Fall to Jefferson, Hornets 108-94

DALLAS,TX–Playing in their second game of a three-game homestand, the Dallas Mavericks (2-3) fell 108-94 in a blowout loss to the Charlotte Hornets (2-3) in front of a sellout crowd at the American Airlines Center. The Mavs remain winless at home, after the Hornets broke a streak of 14 straight road losses at the hands of the Mavericks.

 

After voicing his frustration over playing time, saying he’d “almost rather play the second half only,” Chandler Parsons got his wish. Despite still being limited to just 15 minutes per game, Parsons started the second half after not playing in the first. He warmed up with the team like usual before the game, and when the second half came around, the Mavs rolled out him out with the starting lineup.

 

Well, to put it lightly, the “second half only” experiment was a complete failure. Parsons was unable to get adjusted to the flow of the game, seeming to force his role in the team’s offense, finishing the game with just 2 points on 1 of 5 shooting and a minus 16 in just 14 minutes of play.

 

“It’s almost like the basketball gods said, here you go for that dumbass idea,” Parsons told reporter following the game.

 

After leading the Mavs with 6 points in the first quarter, Deron Williams sat for nearly the first 6 minutes of the second while the Hornets built up a 10 points lead with 8 minutes to go in the second quarter. The Mavs used a 7-0 Mavs run to battle their way back to end the quarter, trailing by just one point at halftime.

 

In the third quarter, the Mavs were out scored 24-14, failing to contend with size and strength of Al Jefferson who overpowered the Mavs frontline, finishing with a game-high with 31 points, including 12 points (6/6 FGs) in the third quarter, to put Charlotte up by 11 to end the period.

 

Ultimately, it was the fourth quarter that ended up being the Mavs undoing once again. After the Hornets busted the game wide open in the 4^th quarter with a 24-point lead, there wasn’t much the Mavs could do to get back into it, continuing to get beat down in the paint. The Hornets finished the game with 58-36 edge over the Mavericks in the paint.

 

Despite another strong performance from Dwight Powell, who followed up his first career double-double performance on Tuesday with a career-high 14 points and 9 rebounds, the Mavs fell to the Hornets.

 

Notes:

• JaVale McGee (left tibial stress fracture) remained out and appears to be couple weeks away from returining.
• Prior to the game, Mavs PR announced head coach Rick Carlisle had been signed to a contract extension. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein the contract is worth 5-years and $35 million.
