Affectionately nicknamed “Mr. Ranger,” Texas Rangers legend Michael Young will join an exclusive list of the franchise’s greatest after the team announced a retirement ceremony for his No. 10 jersey on August 31 against Seattle.
The announcement came less than two weeks after Texas retired Adrian Beltre’s No. 29 jersey in a ceremony June 8. With Beltre, Young will join Ivan Rodriguez (No. 7), former manger Johnny Oates (No. 26), Nolan Ryan (No. 34) and Major League Baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson (No. 42), whose number is retired by all 30 teams.
Aside from donning No. 2 in his first two MLB seasons, Young wore No. 10 for his entire tenure with the team. The team hadn’t issued the number since he was traded to Philadelphia in Dec. 2012. He is the Texas’ all-time leader with 2,230 hits, finished with a career .300 average, hit 185 home runs, and was a seven-time All-Star.
Young was inducted into the Rangers Hall-of-Fame in 2016, and has worked with the team as an assistant to general manager Jon Daniels since his retirement after the 2013 season. He also currently resides in the Dallas area.
