Part 1 of a 4 part series in which the Cowboys final 53-man roster will be discussed and analyzed
The first weekend of NFL preseason games is in the books. Teams now have a better understanding of what exactly they have on their roster. But it’s still early. Players stock will rise and fall as they continue to practice and play games. However, let’s take a early look at the final 53-man roster for the Dallas Cowboys if the season began Sunday.
QB Dak Prescott
QB Cooper Rush
QB Mike White
Cooper Rush was 15/23 for 145 yards and touchdown in their first preseason game against the 49ers. The Cowboys want to continue developing a quarterback behind Dak and his performance was enough to keep him at number 2. Mike White is a 5th round pick that the Cowboys valued higher than that. At 6’5 225 he has prototypical size at quarterback. Too much potential to let go.
RB Ezekiel Elliot
RB Rod Smith
RB Bo Scarbrough
First two are locks. Rod Smith is showing growth and is vital on special teams. Scarbrough is a tank and if he can contribute on special teams then he will earn 3rd string considerations.
FB Jamize Olawale
WR Allen Hurns
WR Terrance Williams
WR Cole Beasley
WR Michael Gallup
WR Tavon Austin
WR Lance Lenoir Jr
At the start of camp everyone wondered how the Cowboys would trim this group down to 5 or 6. It’s simple. These players, outside of Williams, have been more productive then the others competing for a position. Williams ability to be a reliable run blocker secures him a spot on the roster. Noah Brown could also be a candidate to put them at six receivers, but he’s been hurt. So he is on the outside looking in.
TE Geoff Swaim
TE Blake Jarwin
TE Dalton Schultz
TE Veteran???
A veteran could round out this group as none of the tight ends have done enough to separate from each other. Hometown beloved Rico Gathers still has not gained the trust from the coaches to be a full-time threat. We could see Gathers sporting a different jersey when the season starts.
C Travis Fredrick
C Joe Looney
G Zack Martin
G Connor Williams
T La’el Collins
T Cameron Fleming
T Chaz Green
T Tyron Smith
You know the starting five. Joe Looney is trusted by the coaches. Tackles Chaz Green and Cameron Fleming give depth behind both Tyron Smith and La’el collins, who were both hampered both injury last season.
DE Dorance Armstrong
DE Taco Charlton
DE Tyrone Crawford
DE Randy Gegory
DE Demarcus Lawrence
DT Maliek Collins
DT Brian Price
DT Jihad Ward
DT Antwaun Woods
Antwaun Woods earned 1st team reps against 49ers. Should say a lot about how the Cowboys feel about him. However, Brian Price could be cut because of the rising of Woods and substituted for Kony Ealy if the Cowboys decided to go longer at defensive end.
LB Sean Lee
LB Jaylon Smith
LB Leighton Vander Esch
LB Damien Wilson
LB Joe Thomas
LB Chris Covington
CB Chidobe Awuzie
CB Anthony Brown
CB Byron Jones
CB Jourdan Lewis
CB Kam Kelly
CB Donavan Olumba
Kam Kelly and Donovan Olumba are both Kris Richard type of guys. 6’2 and physical. Therefore, their size could warrant the Cowboys not wanting to risk losing them once teams around the league make their final cuts.
S Kavon Frazier
S Jeff Heath
S Marquestion Huff
S Xavier Woods
K Dan Bailey
P Chris Jones
LS L.P. Ladouceur
