It has been four years since Dirk Nowitzki played for his German national team. Despite the tough first round exit in the NBA playoffs this season, there were a few things he was able to take advantage of. He was able to spend time with family and travel, and now he seems rested up and ready to rejoin his German squad as they will be hosting EuroBasket 2015 in Berlin.

“I’ve chosen to be in Berlin. I’ve had the whole month of May and used it to gain some distance and enjoy family time. Of course, I also have consulted the matter with my wife.”

This for all tends and purposes, figures to be Nowitzki’s last run with his national team. Over the last few years, Mark Cuban has been very vocal about his opinion on NBA players playing for their respective countries, worried about how injuries and fatigue can effect the game once the NBA season tips off.  This time, it was clear that Nowitzki couldn’t resist playing in his own country representing the country he is from.

“If it was anywhere else, at the age of 37, it probably would have been a no-go for me, but when I heard that EuroBasket would be played in Berlin, a great basketball city, it was something I had dreamt about.”

One of the biggest moments in Nowitzki’s life and basketball playing career was leading Germany to the Olympics back in 2008, and while he plays at a much slower pace nowadays than back then, he will look to find a way to do that once again come September when EuroBasket tips off.
