The No. 24 SMU Mustangs improved to 6-0 after a thrilling comeback win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Saturday night. Mustangs, who came in ranked for the first time since 1986 found themselves down 30-9 heading to the 4th quarter despite winning the turnover battle 3-0.
Reggie Roberson left the game in the third quarter. Coach Sonny Dykes said that Roberson should be fine going forward.
The Mustangs got on the board first with a pick six by Ar’mani Johnson. Mustangs would have the extra point blocked so the score would be 6-0. Johnson caught two interceptions in the first half.
The Mustangs offense was held to 133 total yards and was only able to come away with three points off three Tulsa first half turnovers.
Keylon Stokes of the Golden Hurricane had a pair of touchdowns in the first half with his only two catches. Tulsa would take a 23-9 lead into halftime.
Dykes said after the game that he felt his team fed off of him and played “tight” in the first half.
It was all Mustangs in the fourth as they outscored Tulsa 21-0 to tie the game at 30. Xavier Jones converted two huge fourth downs on the Mustangs game tying drive including his four yard touchdown run on the 4th and 1 with 1:08 left in the 4th. Mustangs converted 6 of 7 fourth downs in the game.
After the teams exchanged scores in the first OT, Jones fumbled in the second OT to set up Tulsa for an opportunity to kick a game winning field goal. That opportunity was missed. Tulsa missed another field goal in the third OT to set SMU up with an opportunity to win the game.
That was an opportunity that receiver James Proche did not pass up. Proche hauled in his 2nd touchdown of the night to send SMU to a 43-37 win. Proche finished the game with 11 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
