D-Will’s time in Dallas is officially coming to a close.
The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have requested waivers on point guard Deron Williams. While his preference was to stay in Dallas, his outright release allows the Mavs to part-ways with the 32 year-old veteran point guard while allowing him to choose his preferred destination. The Mavs received at least two trade offers for Williams, including a deal that would have sent him to the Utah Jazz.
Williams is expected to join the Cleveland Cavaliers for a championship run, according to NBA.com’s David Aldridge while the Mavs are expected to sign a free agent point guard to fill Williams’ roster spot until J.J. Barea (calf) is able to return from injury.
Rick Carlisle is expected to hand the keys to the offense to rookie point guard sensation Yogi Ferrell, who has averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.0 steals as the starting point guard.
Williams was drafted as the third pick in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Jazz. A 12-year NBA veteran re-signed with the Mavs on July 8, 2016 after completing a one-year deal with the team during the 2015-16 season. He was on a one-year, $9 million deal with the Mavs, averaging 13.1 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 40 games.
