Mavs Find Pass-First Point Guard in Cowboys All-Time Leading Passer

DALLAS, TX - APRIL 28: (L-R) Jason Witten and Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys watch a game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks in Game Four of the Western Conference Quarterfinals during the 2014 NBA Playoffs at American Airlines Center on April 28, 2014 in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas Mavericks have had an open roster spot ever since the organization did not resign Manny Harris after his second 10-Day contract. Stories about Mark Cuban saying they wanted a pass-first point guard traveled all around the internet.

We have to get that one pass-first point guard. That’s what we don’t have.” Cuban said to the Dallas Morning News.  When asked last night about whether the Mavs would fill that empty roster spot, Coach Rick Carlisle responded, “I do think there’s a chance we’ll fill it. I don’t know the timing of it, but there is something in the works.”

That “something in the works” has apparently filled the pass-first need that Cuban has been hinting at, and whether this has been a collaboration or a mere coincidence, it’s pretty awesome.

Today Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks intend to “honor Tony Romo at their home finale Tuesday night by making the longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback “a Maverick for a day.

In one of the better attempts at Dallas-Pro-Sports-Crossover, Romo will be in uniform and on the bench for the Mavericks as they take on Denver to celebrate his historic career. Cuban wanted a pass-first point guard? How about the Dallas Cowboys leader in touchdown passes and passing yards? The 37-year-old quarterback and future CBS broadcaster was officially released by the Cowboys on Wednesday after announcing he was done playing football.[note]Not retired, just done, *wink*[/note] Romo most likely won’t see any game action but looking at the team the Mavs fielded in the second half last night, he might just be an improvement.

*Cut to Jason Witten saying “You could make that pass”
