On the night of the last home game of the season, the Mavs opted for a little more than merely “Fan Appreciation Night.” The mind of Mark Cuban got creative and figured a “Maverick for a Day” promotion involving Tony Romo might spice up a Tuesday night affair with the Denver Nuggets.
Mr. Cuban was right, as he so often is, and it was quite the night. After the fun pregame antics and laughs, there was a real game to play. The Nuggets might have been a little more prepared for that game as they ultimately won 109-91.
Both teams weren’t close to full strength as the Mavs were without Seth Curry (shoulder), Wesley Matthews (rest) and Harrison Barnes (rest) and the Nuggets sat the likes of Kenneth Faried and Danilo Gallinari.
The Nuggets rode the strength of a 2nd quarter effort that saw them outscore the Mavericks 34-18. Dallas never led in the second half and spent the majority of it trailing by double digits. For Denver, third year guard Gary Harris led with 20 points on the night. Big man Mason Plumlee impressed with 16 points and 9 rebounds in 34 minutes to lead an impressive Denver frontcourt that also includes rising star Nikola Jokic.
For the Mavs, Dirk Nowitzki closed his 2016-2017 campaign with a 21 point, 8 rebound performance. The Big Geman’s midrange game looked as good as it has all season long. J.J. Barea continued his post-All Star Break surge in the assist column. He dished out 9 dimes while adding 13 points.
The Mavericks will close out the regular season tomorrow night in Memphis against the Grizzlies. It is not anticipated that a lot of the veterans will be available to play.
On the Tony Romo front, stay tuned to Mavs Fanatic to check for photos of tonight’s warmups and some postgame content as well.
On behalf of everyone at Mavs Fanatic, thank you, Tony!
