How it happened: The Warriors outscored O.J. Mayo in overtime.
Mayo, who didn’t get the ball when the Mavs had the chance to win on the final possession of regulation, scored all 11 of Dallas’ points in the extra period. That wasn’t enough to beat the Warriors.
Golden State’s Stephen Curry had 20 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. That included a couple of free throws to essentially seal the victory after Shawn Marion missed a midrange jumper with the Mavs trailing by two in the final minute.
Mayo had 18 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Chris Kaman (18 points, 17 rebounds) and Troy Murphy (12 points) were the only other Mavs to finish in double figures.
Dallas point guard Darren Collison hit a game-tying jumper with 36.1 seconds remaining, but that was one of the only things that went right for him all night. Collison had seven points on 2-of-11 shooting, five assists and five turnovers while struggling to guard Curry all game.
Vince Carter, who briefly left the game due to a sore right hamstring, missed a pull-up fadeaway over Harrison Barnes at the regulation buzzer.
What it means: The Mavs (6-6) fell to .500 again. They opened up a three-game homestand with their second loss this season at the American Airlines Center. The Warriors are a team that could be in the mix for one of the West’s last playoff spots, so this one could really end up stinging.
Play of the game: Curry had a bunch of clutch buckets, but he was the set-up man on the game-winner. With the help of a pick, Curry penetrated into the lane and dished to Lee for a layup with 32.7 seconds remaining.
Stat of the night:The Mavs have trailed by at least 10 points in each of their losses this season. They are 0-6 when they dig a double-digit hole.
