Mark Cuban, Mavericks halt the playing of national anthem at home games

On Tuesday, it was reported that Mark Cuban had made the decision to stop playing the national anthem at Mavericks’ home games, first reported by Tim Cato of The Athletic.

The anthem has yet to be played in all 13 home games for Dallas this preseason and regular season and as Cato reported, the Mavericks “have no plans to do so moving forward.”

“It was my decision, and I made it in November,” Cuban told Marc Stein of The New York Times on Tuesday.

Cuban didn’t announced the decision before the season but due to league rules, was allowed to go forward with the new policy.

What would certainly have become news earlier in the season, the lack of fans and honestly just the newness and awkwardness of playing and covering sports during a pandemic makes it easy small details like this to be missed.

The Mavericks had fans in the arena for the first game of the season on Monday, allowing 1,500 vaccinated, frontline workers in the American Airlines Center.
