In a battle of lottery bound teams, the Dallas Mavericks (23-51) beat the Sacramento Kings (24-51) 103-97 Tuesday night in Sacramento.
The Mavs took over the game early on with a quick 11-0 run to take an early lead, before the Kings managed to keep chipping away at the lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Mavs lead by only five points. The second quarter wasn’t much of a change as the Mavs couldn’t hit their free throws, which helped the Kings stay in the game. Kings forward Kosta Koufas, who had 15 points early on, had a three-point play to help cut the Mavs lead down to 3. Yet, the stellar play of Dennis Smith Jr. helped push the lead back to 8 by halftime.
The third quarter was most of the same for Dallas, but the Kings later go on a 13-2 run to get back into the game and enter the fourth quarter only down by five. Yet, efficient play by the Mavs’ bench helped Dallas extend their lead and eventually the win. Yogi Ferrell, who struggled for much of the first half, came alive by hitting multiple big shots to ice the game in the end.
The Mavs shot 45% from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc. The Kings were held to just 40 percent shooting from the field and only managed to shoot 26.1% from the three. The Mavs lost the rebounding battle to the Kings 45-43 and 13 turnovers to the Kings’ ten.
The Mavs were led by Harrison Barnes, who had 20 points and tied his career high six assists in a game. Smith Jr. added 19 points and Doug McDermott contributed 15 points, including some clutch threes to ice the game. Ferrell finished the game with 9 points.
The Dallas Mavericks now travel down to Hollywood and face off against the Los Angeles Lakers tomorrow night. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. CST and will be shown live on Fox Sports Southwest.
