Dallas Cowboys owner and general Manager, Jerry Jones offered up a nice long interview for reporters while attending the NFL scouting combine.
One popular topic? The eight year veteran receiver Dez Bryant of course. It’s been a highly debated question on whether or not the Cowboys should cut Bryant prior to June 1st, they could save up to $12.5 million, with $4 million still counting against the salary cap for 2019. Should the Cowboys keep everything as is, Bryant would count for $16.5 million this season.
Jerry Jones didn’t hold back on where he stood on the matter, but didn’t offer specifics into how he will go about it.
“As I sit here, do we want him on the team next year?” Jones said. “The answer is yes. We’re not in any way off the page within the organization.”
Bryant’s numbers have been on the decline for quite some time now, but Jones still regards him as a true number one receiver and one that they should look heavily at when discussing such a big decision.
“We have addressed guys in the prime of their careers’ contracts before,” Jones said. “We have made adjustments in their contracts. We continue to look for ways to improve your value on your roster. But Dez has a history with me on the Cowboys of working with his money. He is not the only one that that’s happened.”
Though there have been no discussions between Bryant and the organization, Jones did hint a meeting would “probably be needed in the immediate future.”
While there are supporters to both sides of the decision, it would seem that Dez Bryant suiting up in a different teams uniform this upcoming season would be the worst case scenario – at least from Mr. Jones point of view.
