If you tune into the NFL championship games this weekend, you will notice that one of the biggest things all four teams share is having innovative, schematic and aggressive offenses. As it has been said to death all season long, the Dallas Cowboys are nowhere near that style of offensive play. To make matters worse, as long as Jason Garrett is stubborn towards his offensive philosophy, the Cowboys will be stuck.
The Cowboys got firsthand knowledge of how good these new-age offense can be and how deadly they can be to a defense. The Los Angeles Rams, led by head coach Sean McVay, run a variation of the West Coast offense, but use shorter passes to set up deeper passes as the game goes on. He also loves to use play-action a lot with the help of a good rushing attack. Yet, the biggest thing McVay and his offense loves to do is misdirection with the football. Every play has maybe 3 or 4 options that it could go to and all used to trick the defense on where the football is going. It helped trick the Cowboys’ defense all night long during their loss to the Rams in the divisional round.
This type of offense is what is taking over the league and any kind of variation of it could instantly help the talent the offense already has. Jason Garrett has other ideas on how an offense should be run. His ideas are rooted not on a scheme but winning your individual match-ups. Win those, the Cowboys win the game. The problem is that sometimes you will have match-ups that don’t favor you and if you don’t adapt you will lose the game. This philosophy worked back in the 90s when the Cowboys were one of the most dominant teams in the league. Today, most teams are equal in talent and schemes are needed to get the edge you need.
In order for any change to happen, you have to convince Garrett to change his ideology. Any new coordinator that is brought in is most likely still going to have to run Garrett’s offense. This is time that the Jones family steps up and makes an ultimatum to Jason once and for all. Either adapt to a new offense or find the door.
How realistic is that scenario? It is pretty far-fetched, but Jerry Jones is enamored with the modern offenses and he gets what he wants. Hopefully this off-season Jerry will be the one to change Garrett’s mind.
