The NBA Free agency season is less than twelve hours old and the Dallas Mavericks have already lost out on their number one target.
Hassan Whiteside, the 27 year-old big man of the Miami Heat, broke the news via Snapchat and a short piece in The Players’ Tribune around 6:45 Dallas time Friday morning.
This was a somewhat surprising turn considering the positive vibes that surrounded Dallas’ meeting and negotiations with Whiteside last night. Once free agency officially began at midnight ET, the Mavs were reportedly in NY meeting with their target and many national writers were proclaiming Dallas the favorite to land him.
Whiteside reportedly met with Heat early Friday as well and sealed the deal.
Miami appeared to be fading on the young big man’s radar possibly because of their commitment to a meeting with superstar Kevin Durant on Sunday and still needing to negotiate a huge contract with franchise legend Dwyane Wade. There have been no reports on whether resigning affects either of those players yet. It’s incredibly unlikely that Miami could sign all three; especially not on max deals.
Dallas will now have to turn the page quickly and move on with their offseason. They have a meeting with point guard Mike Conley Jr. in Dallas Friday. It’s widely thought that Conley will remain with his incumbent team, the Memphis Grizzlies.
With over 150 free agents in this class and a ton of cap space to play with, there’s still a lot dominoes to fall for the Dallas Mavericks this summer. Stay tuned to Mavs Fanatic for all your updates.
