With the rosters down to 53, the preparation for Carolina has begun for the 2018 Dallas Cowboys. There were some surprises to get to that 53 man roster, such as Rico Gathers remaining on the roster and Dan Bailey not being on the roster. The Cowboys continue to show that this franchise is no longer going to commit to guys based on past production. If you aren’t performing to their expectation, they will find a younger player to come in and expect them to perform at a high level.
Let’s look ahead to five bold predictions for the Cowboys in 2018.
Chidobe Awuzie Makes the Pro Bowl
If the 2018 Cowboys defense is going to be as good as we hope and expect, a big part of that will be the play of Chidobe Awuzie. Awuzie is only in year two as an NFL player, but has quickly ascended to the top of the depth chart at the corner position. There are high expectations for Awuzie and he will live up to those expectations and make the Pro Bowl in 2018.
Randy Gregory has 10 sacks (if he stays on the field)
As the Cowboys have alluded to when talking about Gregory, every day is a battle for Gregory as he tries to stay on the right path so that he can stay on the field. The one thing that isn’t questionable is his talent. It jumps off the screen when watching him attack the line of scrimmage as he tries to get to the quarterback. If he is able to stay on the field, he will have at least 10 sacks opposite Demarcus Lawrence.
Michael Gallup has over 1000 yards receiving
During training camp, Dak Prescott was asked who his go to receiver is in the receiver group, his response was Cole Beasley. That is understandable because Cole was his favorite target during his record setting rookie season in 2016. However, that changes with rookie receiver Michael Gallup now in the fold. Gallups ability to get open and catch with his hands will be a welcomed addition for Prescott. Gallup will lead this team in catches, yards and touchdowns and will establish himself as the team’s number one receiver going forward.
Rico Gathers will be teams starting tight end by year’s end
I don’t know if there has been more hype for a guy that has never played a regular season snap in the NFL. If Gathers was cut this past weekend, it would have sent Cowboys Nation into an uproar, even with his arrest early Saturday morning. There is a lot that Gathers has to improve on, but Coach Garrett says that he has started that improvement with a strong training camp and preseason and ultimately that is what saved his job. That improvement and the lack of talent in the tight end room is why Gathers will be your starting tight end by the end of 2018.
The Cowboys and Giants make the playoffs and the Eagles do not
The NFC East is one of the least predictable divisions in the NFL. Just when you think you have it figured out, the Eagles, who were projected to finish in last place in 2017, go on to win the division and the Super Bowl. In 2018, the roles will be reversed. The Cowboys have a recent history of surprising when expectations are low and disappointing coming off a good year. They will go 11-5 in 2018 and win the NFC East, while the Giants will go 10-6 and make the playoffs as the wild card.
