Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. was named to the NBA’s 2017-18 All-Rookie Second Team, it was announced today, after averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 69 games in his first season as a Maverick.
Selected ninth in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Mavericks out of North Carolina, Smith Jr. also competed in the 2018 Verizon Slam Dunk Contest. He joins Yogi Ferrell, Josh Howard, Marquis Daniels, Jason Kidd, Jamal Mashburn, Roy Tarpley, Sam Perkins and Jay Vincent as the only Mavs to receive All-Rookie Team honors.
Donovan Mitchell and Ben Simmons unanimously headlined the All-Rookie First Team. They were joined by Jayson Tatum, Kyle Kuzma, and Lauri Markkanen. Smith Jr. joined Lonzo Ball, John Collins, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Josh Jackson on the NBA’s All-Rookie Second Team. Smith Jr. finished sixth in voting, fifth among 2017 draft class.
