Dallas Mavericks prized-rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is expected to be out for multiple games after suffering a left ankle injury.
“He’s going to be out for a while, but it’s not serious,” Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle told the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t have a timetable, but he’s going to miss some games.”
Smith Jr. inadvertently and awkwardly landed on the foot of Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie late in the third quarter of the Mavs 114-106 loss on Saturday night.

Smith Jr. headed straight to the locker room with a limp. X-rays were negative and he left the arena in a walking boot as a precaution.
Before going down, Smith Jr. was sharp, scoring 21 points while dishing out five assists, two blocks, and one steal, while shooting 9-of-17 from the field.
Smith Jr.’s career-high is 27 points.
With 12 games remaining, Smith Jr. hopes to return before the end of the season for the 22-48 Mavs.
“I believe, with the things we’re going to do, I don’t want to say I’m going to be ready for the next game, but they’re going to make sure I can get back this season, for sure,” Smith said to the Dallas Morning News.
The Mavs take on the New Orleans Pelicans on the road on Tuesday night, before heading back to Dallas for a two-game homestand to finish out the week.
Smith Jr., the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of North Carolina, is averaging 14.9 points on 39 percent shooting, along with 4.9 assists and a steal per game in 61 games.
