Eight practices have now come and gone for the 2017 Dallas Cowboys.
Next stop: Canton, OH for the Hall of Fame game, where the Cowboys kickoff their 2017 preseason schedule against the Arizona Cardinals.
Let’s take a look at three guys that are having a good camp and three guys that have not gotten off to the best start.
STOCK UP
Jaylon Smith
While Jaylon Smith is unlikely to play in Thursday’s preseason game, he has shown a lot since camp started. Jaylon put the pads on for the first time since his injury, made a few plays in practices and has even started doing some things on the field without his brace. One guy that has been impressed is veteran linebacker, Sean Lee.
“He’s making it look seamless. He is the complete package and it’s a matter of time before he is dominating.”
Byron is entering his third season and has made it very clear on what he wants to improve on heading into the season. Getting his hands on the football is the last step Byron needs to take to become an elite safety in the NFL. Byron has moved from working with the riders in the outfield in Frisco to tennis ball workouts. That work has paid off so far in training camp.
CHIDOBE AWUZIE
“Cheeto” is handling his first NFL training camp like a trained professional. He has done nothing but impress so far at training camp. He is making plays on the football and is quickly moving up the depth chart for the Cowboys and has a real chance to open as this team’s second corner behind second year cornerback Anthony Brown.
STOCK DOWN
NOLAN CARROLL
Nolan Carroll’s slow start off the field as a cowboy has carried onto the field. Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Brice Butler and Dez Bryant have been taking turns blowing right by Carroll in practice. This development along with the emergence of Chidobe has his job in question.
CHAZ GREEN
Chaz Green was competing with Jonathan Cooper for the starting left guard position, but yet another injury has come up and Green will be out for the next week or so, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
RICO GATHERS
During the off-season program, there was a lot of momentum around Rico and so far during camp, Rico hasn’t been able to keep that momentum going. Gathers was removed from practice for fighting Sunday but did return later during the day.
SOME NOTES HEADING INTO THURSDAYS GAME.
While Jason Garrett has not confirmed, do not expect to see a lot of starters, if any to play Thursday night. You will see a lot of Kellen Moore at QB, which is important because he is the team’s second string quarterback behind Dak.
Justin Durant, Ryan Switzer, Maliek Collins, David Irving and Jourdan Lewis will not make the trip to Ohio. They will all stay back to treat their respective injuries.
This game is a bit of a homecoming game for Taco Charlton. Charlton grew up in Pinkerington, Ohio, which is two hours from Canton.
