The Dallas Cowboys are rolling and there is a ton to be excited about now and even more to be excited about for the future. Amari Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith are all under the age of 24 and are doing most of the heavy lifting during this four game win streak.
Let’s take a look at three questions around this Cowboys team with a little fact or fiction.
The Dallas Cowboys are Super Bowl contenders at this point in the season
What a difference a month can make in the NFL. After a Monday night loss to the Tennessee Titans to fall to 3-5, the Cowboys were in a desperate state. There wasn’t much to be optimistic about, they had just traded their first round pick for Amari Cooper so going to “team tank” had no benefit. Prescott was in a bad place and the offensive line was shaky. Now, after knocking off the New Orleans Saints last Thursday night and doing it in the fashion they did it, especially defensively, this is a legit question. However, for now I am going to say fiction. I want to see the team put the finishing touches on the division against Philadelphia this weekend and I want to see the offense show more consistency. The offensive line has given up 17 sacks the last four weeks and Dak has to put the ball away to avoid those costly fumbles that could derail you in a playoff game against the Rams or a rematch with the Saints.
Sean Lee should get his starting job back when healthy
There was some hope that Sean Lee would be able to return for this Sunday’s game against the Eagles, but he has officially been ruled out. The time is coming where a decision will have to be made about what role Sean Lee will have. Jerry said on his weekly radio interview that Lee will start when healthy. Cowboys are 1-4 when Lee plays this season but even with that being said, Lee should get his job back. Lee starting doesn’t mean there still won’t be plenty of snaps for Vander Esch and Smith.
Jason Garrett has turned a corner as head coach
This is fiction. A four game win streak doesn’t change that at this point. At this point, fair or not, Garrett has to have his team ready in the playoffs and win there before we start to talk about any corner Garrett has turned. I don’t fall into the “players play hard for him” camp. Garrett still has the same flaws that he did when he started as head coach. Now, don’t get me wrong, Garrett has his strengths. His biggest strength is being able to motivate his players and relate to certain situations his players are put in, most recently the tragedy that Michael Gallup went through.
