It’s clear that the Dallas Cowboys are preparing for the likely suspension of running back Ezekiel Elliot. This week amidst the drama of Elliot’s alleged aggravated assault that occurred Sunday evening at a local bar, the Cowboys had veteran running backs, Denard Robinson and Ronnie Hillman workout with the team.
Robinson has played the last four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Having played QB all four years at Michigan, Robinson converted to RB when he signed with the Jaguars. With 1058 total career rushing yards, 5 scores, and experience playing special teams, he could serve as a nice replacement for Ezekiel Elliott. I could see him filling in a role similar to what Lance Dunbar played for the team.
Five-year veteran, Ronnie Hillman, spent his first four years with Denver Broncos and was apart of the Super Bowl winning team in 2016. He played for both the Minnesota Vikings and the San Diego Chargers in his fifth year. During his four-year stint at Denver, he amassed 1845 career rushing yards and twelve TDs.
Current backups to Zeke include Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris, and rookie Jahad Thomas. This will be McFadden’s 3rd year with the Cowboys. He missed training camp and most of the 2016 season due to an elbow injury. Morris is a two time pro-bowler who’s been with the Cowboys for a year. The first four years of his career, he played for Washington and had a total of 1078 career yards with 29 TDs. With training camp starting this week, no doubt the coaches are looking to see what the backups have to offer.
