The Dallas Cowboys entered Friday with Kellen Moore and un-drafted rookie Cooper Rush as the only quarterbacks on the roster behind Dak Prescott. The team was quick to address the depth chart as they announced the signing of veteran quarterback Luke McCown. With the signing, the Cowboys will have three quarterbacks available to play in Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game. Quarterback Dak Prescott is not likely to play in the game.
McCown’s signing comes after the team lost camp quarterback Zak Dysert to a back injury. With just two healthy quarterbacks behind Prescott, the team needed another arm to help take some of the practice reps. Furthermore, the team has the flexibility of limiting Kellen Moore’s reps in the Hall of Fame Game.
Experience:
Luke McCown can be more than a camp arm, however. McCown is entering his 14th season in the NFL. He was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 NFL Draft by Cleveland. Most recently, McCown spent time in New Orleans, where he backed up Drew Brees from 2013-2016. He should immediately step into a mentor role, as he has the experience to help Cooper Rush, and even Dak Prescott, continue to develop.
While the team seems to like Kellen Moore as the backup to Prescott, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if McCown pushed Moore for snaps as the no. 2 quarterback. Even if he doesn’t, the team will certainly appreciate his ability to keep the rest of the quarterbacks fresh. Something that is important during a lengthy training camp.
