Nearly a year ago to date the Dallas Cowboys front office took a stance of veering away from the traditional “number 1 receiver.” Upon the release of former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, the team was heading into training camp with a group headed by Allen Hurns and Terrance Williams.

Not only was that mindset a vital mistake on the part of management, but we’ve seen the team perform a complete 180 since then. After Tuesday’s signing of former Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb, the Cowboys enter the 2019 season with perhaps the most depth at the receiver position we’ve seen in quite some time.

After a breakout Pro Bowl year in 2014, injuries have limited the production of Cobb over the past couple years. A hamstring injury limited him to nine games last year, but he’s been productive in the slot and outside when healthy. He has 470 career catches for 5,524 yards and 41 touchdowns during his time with Aaron Rodgers.

Cobb’s ability to line up in multiple spots on the field gives them an added dimension that current Bills receiver Cole Beasley struggled to provide for this Dallas offense. Cobb’s 11.8 career yards/catch average is enticing in itself, but the value of this signing comes from his ability to create room inside the redzone. Dallas, who finished near the bottom of the league in redzone efficiency in 2018, should be most excited about the production Cobb has generated near the endzone.

2014 – 18 receptions, 112 yards, 11 touchdowns.
2015 – 11 rec, 59 yards, 6 touchdowns.
2016 – 12 rec, 75 yards, 5 touchdowns.

Production begins to slips in 2017, mostly due to a late season injury to Rodgers. And in 2018, Cobb missed nearly half the season. When healthy, Cobb can be a constant threat inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Along with retaining the services of Tavon Austin, the Cowboys continue to give quarterback Dak Prescott strong run-after-catch options to work with.
