Who said the Mavericks were the worst shooting team in the league?
Well, before tonight, that still remained true.
Tonight, the Mavericks won a shootout with the New Orleans Pelicans, 143-130, extending their win streak to four games and five of the last six.
Dallas made a franchise record 25 three pointers tonight, led by Luka Doncic, scoring a career-high 46 points with eight rebounds, 12 assists, and hitting 5/8 from deep.
Kristaps Porzingis hit a career-high eight threes, finishing with 36 points and seven rebounds.
From the jump, it was KP who got the Mavs rolling, scoring 15 first quarter points, the majority from downtown. Luka’s hot streak from deep shortly followed as the tandem were firing at a high clip all game long.
“Luka was phenomenal. KP was phenomenal,” Carlisle said postgame. “Williamson was ridiculous.”
Coming into tonight’s game, Dallas ranked second to last in the NBA in three point percentage at 34.1%. Tonight, the Mavericks shot 55.6% from deep, hitting 25/45. Specifically for Luka, who struggled to find his shot to start the season, has hit 36.4% from three in the last two weeks and 34.7% in the last month, much better than his 30.9% average on the season.
“We’re sharing the ball better. We’re moving it better. We’re playing more of a selfless brand of basketball,” Carlisle said of the offensive improvement during the four-game winning streak.
When your star duo combines for 82 points and 13 makes from three, I’d say you have a pretty good chance at going home with a win.
“It just felt easy and natural. Not every game is going to be like that, but I believe we’re on the right path,” Porzingis said of he and Luka’s performance. “We’re going to keep working on that chemistry and keep making sure both of us are playing at a high level.”
But the defense tonight? You could say it was optional. “It was a pillow fight on defense,” Carlisle said.
Zion Williamson had his way with the Mavericks frontline tonight, scoring 36 points on 14/15 shooting. Brandon Ingram finished with 30 points of his own along with five rebounds and five assists.
The Mavericks look to win their fifth straight on Sunday against the Trail Blazers.
