After one of the most deflating and inactive weekends in Dallas Mavericks history, the dominoes of a busy offseason have begun to fall in the last 24 hours.
As a result of Kevin Durant signing with the Golden State Warriors, Harrison Barnes became an unrestricted free agent and announced his signing with Dallas on Monday night. The 24 year-old will get a 4 year, $94 million dollar contract; giving him the highest annual salary in Mavericks history.
With the Warriors needing to clear even more space for the Durant signing, they unloaded starting center Andrew Bogut to the Mavericks in a trade that sent only a conditional second round pick to Golden State. The number one overall pick of the 2005 Draft comes to Dallas with one year and slightly over $11 million on his contract.
The two moves give Mavericks a new starting small forward following the departure of Chandler Parsons on Friday and a new starting center with Zaza Pachulia signing with the Warriors on Monday afternoon.
Dallas will likely have the same starting point guard on consecutive opening nights since the Jason Kidd-era after they agreed to a one year, $10 million dollar deal with Deron Williams late Sunday night. The DFW native averaged 14 points and 6 assists in his first season with the Mavs.
A likely starting lineup for Dallas on opening night could be Williams, Wesley Matthews, Barnes, Dirk Nowitzki and Bogut. Three carry-over’s from last year, and 40% of the 73 win Warriors’ starting lineup from the last two years.
If that weren’t enough, Dallas inked Seth Curry to a 2 year, $6 million deal to likely replace Raymond Felton’s role as combo guard off the bench for Dallas. Curry, the younger brother of two time MVP Steph Curry, has struggled to find his footing in the NBA. The 25 year-old has played a total of 48 regular seasons games for four different teams in his three years in the league. The Duke alum showed flashes of clicking while averaging close to 7 points in 16 minutes per game in just over a half a season for the Sacramento Kings this year.
The Mavs’ front office definitely didn’t take the July 4th holiday off. The next big step will be officially inking Dirk Nowitzki to his deal to return to Dallas. Keep checking back with Mavs Fanatic for your offseason updates.
