The old saying goes, “success is where preparation meets opportunity.”
For Yogi Ferrell, that opportunity came just seven short days ago when the Dallas Mavericks (20-30) inked him to a 10-day contract as an undrafted rookie free agent. Now, he’s reportedly apart of the Mavs long-term rebuilding plan in the soon-to-be post-Dirk Nowitzki Era.
The Indiana Hoosiers alum has agreed to a two-year deal, sources told Sham Charania of The Vertical. This comes just one day after Ferrell’s 32 points led the Mavs over the Portland Trail Blazers (22-29). Ferrell was 9-of-11 from behind the three-point line.
Ferrell has averaged 17.8 points, 5.0 assists and 1.8 steals in 37.5 minutes in four games while starting in place of the injured Deron Williams.
On Friday night, the Mavs jumped out to an early 17-4 lead on the Trail Blazers, connecting on 7 of 7 from the field to begin the game. They headed into the second quarter with a 13-point lead after hoisting a season-high 35-point first quarter.
The Mavs built their lead to as much as 24 points, before the Blazers eventually tied the game at 92 with 4:16 left in regulation. After 22 first half points, Ferrell was held to just seven in the second half, before a clutch three-pointer with 19.2 seconds left sealed the Mavs fourth straight victory.
“We’ve got a special group, a special group of guys and they really welcomed me into the team. I was thankful for that,” Ferrell said. “That doesn’t happen often. It happened very quickly, so I’m just out there having a lot of fun and living the dream.”
Wesley Matthews finished the game with 27 points and 6 rebounds while Seth Curry added 19 points.
The Mavs have now won nine of their last 12 games.
They now head to Denver for an away match-up against the Nuggets before returning to Dallas for a rematch against the Portland Trail Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back.
The Mavs remain just 2.5 games back behind the eighth-seeded Nuggets.
