Mavs Remain Winless, Fall to Warriors 133-103

Behind 29 points from Steph Curry, the defending champion Golden State Warriors improved to 2-2 on Monday night with a 133-103 win over the still-winless Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center.

Dallas (0-4) now possesses the worst record in the NBA.

The Mavericks fell behind early, as teams are wont to do against the Warriors. Golden State opened with a 19-6 barrage and stretched their lead to 40-24 at the end of the first quarter before Dallas roared back with 38 in the second quarter behind great ball movement and great perimeter shooting from Wes Matthews and J.J. Barea. Matthews finished with 19 points on 3-of-7 shooting from deep while Barea added 13.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said he liked what he saw in the second quarter, but gave credit to the defending champs for pulling away in the third quarter.

“We had a rough start (in the third quarter),” Carlisle said. “We knew they were going to come out determined.”
Curry did most of his damage from the foul line in this one and not from his customary spot 30 feet behind the arc. He finished 13-of-13 from the line and was guarded mostly by Dallas rookie Dennis Smith Jr.

Speaking of the rookie, he struggled in this one and finished with just 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting with just one assist. He was also 4-of-10 from the line.

Perhaps the most interesting moment for Smith and the Mavericks came in the second half when Smith rose up along the baseline to try to dunk over Draymond Green.

Smith was fouled by Green and when the two came down, Green could be seen mouthing, “You’ll never dunk on me. You’re a boy. Ever!”

Smith smiled and laughed in response, but the game was already out of Dallas’ grasp by that point.
To make matters worse for the Mavericks, Jordan Bell threw a self alley-oop off the backboard and slammed it home with a foul on Gian Clavell with Golden State leading by 25 in the closing minutes. The move allegedly didn’t set well with Warriors’ veterans David West, Shawn Livingston or head coach Steve Kerr.

All in all, Dallas shot 39.6 percent from the field and was out-rebounded by Golden State, 50-42. The Warriors shot 55 percent.

The schedule does not get any easier with a home-and-home split with Memphis on Wednesday and Thursday and the Sixers in town on Saturday.

I'm Zack Cunningham, a broadcast journalism major from Abilene Christian University's class of 2008. I've lived in Texas for 28 of my 31 years on this Earth and I've followed the Mavericks since 1998. My first memory of them was the 2001 playoffs and being extremely happy when they beat the Jazz, but sad when they lost to the Spurs in five games in the conference semifinals. However, seeing Dirk drop 42 stands out to me, punctuated by his dunk in garbage time. I covered high school sports for the Cleburne Times-Review from 2008-12 before moving into the tech industry. Most recently, in 2015 covered the Mavericks for the Fanatic briefly before moving to work with Mike Fisher at DallasBasketball.com. I am married to my beautiful wife, Jessica, and have been for just over five years now. We live in Carrollton with our dog, Zara, and cat, Drake. I'm looking forward to covering them again this season with the Fanatic!
