Report: Glen “Big Baby” Davis has received a call from the Mavs

The latest free agency rumors have now linked the Dallas Mavericks to free agent forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis. According to a report from Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Davis, who last played with (ahem) DeAndre Jordan and Los Angeles Clippers (4.0 points, 2.3 rebounds), has received a call from the Mavs.

While it’s unclear whether the interest is mutual, the Mavs roster already sits at a maximum of 20 players for training camp. So, if Davis were indeed added, a player, likely Jarrid Famous, Brandon Ashley or Jamil Wilson, would need to be waived in order to make room for him.

The report also notes that “Big Baby’ has received interest from Europe and China, although a move overseas would seem pretty unlikely at this point for the 29 year-old Davis. He has a history with Clips head coach Doc Rivers dating back to his glory days with Boston (with Rajon Rondo) and LA has a roster spot open after recently waiving Jordan Hamilton. He’s likely using the Mavs exploratory interest to leverage himself towards a multi-year deal to stay in LA, rather than easily settling for a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum.

For the Mavs, it’s difficult to imagine “Big Baby” as a building block for the Mavs future. It’s safe to say the call was as much exploratory as it was just a formality. Following the disaster that was DeAndre Jordan’s reneged deal with Dallas, they have seemingly been linked to nearly every free agent big man on the market. Whether Davis is a fit for the Mavs isn’t even the question. This team is stuck between mediocrity and rebuilding and it will likely be like that until Dirk retires.

So, take this rumor as no more than free agency fodder. Sure, the Mavs could add Davis or they could simply pass on the big man. Either way, it wouldn’t change much of anything for the Mavs in terms of progress.
